Document a science project

Science projects, school experiments, and curiosity investigations are a great use for multi-part capture. Hypothesis, setup, observations, and results; capture each stage and let the child explain what they were testing. Perfect for school science fair projects and at-home experiments.

Why use multi-part capture

A science project is a process, not a single picture. The hypothesis, the materials, the steps, and the results all matter. Multi-part capture keeps the full experiment together in order, and voice notes let the child explain the thinking behind each stage; just like presenting at a science fair.

Getting started

On the Create tab, tap "More ways to create", then choose "Add more parts".

Step by step

1. Tell us about the whole project

Before the first capture, the child can introduce the project in a voice note:

"This is my experiment about which soil makes plants grow fastest. I'm testing three kinds of dirt."

This plays at the start, like an abstract or introduction. It is optional and can be re-recorded.

2. Capture the hypothesis

The first part becomes the gallery cover, so start with the hypothesis; the written or drawn prediction. A poster board, a notebook page, or a drawing that says "I think X will happen." After this capture, the child can record a voice note explaining what they think will happen and why.

3. Capture the materials and setup

Lay out all the materials; seeds, soil, cups, water, rulers; and capture them together. Then capture the setup: the pots arranged, the labels written, the experiment ready to begin. Each can have its own voice note describing what is being used.

4. Capture observations over time

As the experiment progresses, come back and add more parts. Day 1 growth, Day 3 growth, Day 7 growth; each observation becomes a new part. After each capture, the child can record a voice note describing what they see:

"On day three, the plant in the potting soil is taller than the one in the garden dirt. I measured it; it's two centimeters."

5. Capture the results

When the experiment is done, capture the final results; the measurements, the charts, the grown plants, or the data table. This gives the project a clear ending and makes it easy to see the outcome.

6. Review and reorder

Tap "Done adding parts" to review the full project. The hypothesis should be first, followed by materials, observations in order, and results at the end. Use Move earlier or Move later to fix the order.

7. Name it and save

Add a name in Details; "Plant Growth Experiment," "Volcano Eruption Test," "Which Paper Plane Flies Farthest"; then save. The project appears in the gallery with the hypothesis as the cover.

Building a science collection

Create a space called "Science Projects" or "Experiments" to group all science creations over time. A child can suggest the space from the Spaces tab; a grown-up approves it. Every project saved after that can live inside the space.

At the end of the school year, the space becomes a complete record of every experiment; what was tested, what was learned, and the child's own explanations of each result.

Quick tips

One experiment per creation. Each project stays its own multi-part creation; they are easier to find and share when kept separate.

Add parts over time. Science projects often span days or weeks. You can return to a creation and add new observation parts as the experiment progresses.

Voice notes are like a science fair presentation. The child's narration explains the thinking, not just the pictures.

Up to 30 parts. A typical project uses 5–15 parts (hypothesis, materials, multiple observations, results), well within the limit.
